The Life after Stroke Collection

These stories were shared by members of the NHS Lanarkshire Stroke Patient and Carer Group. This collection presents an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of stroke survivors, which is vital in informing the giving of appropriate care.

A Job Well Done
Donald looks back on a previously stressful existence as a busy professional who ignored a number of early warning signes. He tells of the many changes he has made to the pace of life following a stroke and pays a touching tribute to his much-loved West Highland terrier, Mac, who played an instrumental part in his rehabilitation.
A New Lease of Life
Margaret talks about her life as a very shy child who grew into a quiet and self-contained wife and mother, guarding and valuing her privacy. She describes how her initial resentment of the care team who came into her home following a stroke transformed into friendship, giving her the confidence to attend the local stroke patient clubs which have brought about a new lease of life.
A Very Special Child
Mo recalls her initial heartached on discovering that she was unable to hold her long-awaited first grandchild, Chloe, who arrived three months after her stroke. Mo goes on to describe how regaining enough movement in her arm to be able to hold Chloe spurred her on and she delights in highlighting the important role that this very special child has played in her recovery
